Larry Hawes Obituary

Aaron, Abbi and I would like to thank our family and friends for the love and support shown to us with the recent loss of our own father and grandfather.

Larry Glenn Hawes, a steadfast pillar of the Amboy community and beloved family man, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2024, in Glendale, Arizona. Born in Freeport, Illinois, on March 31, 1936, to Glen and Margaret (Schmidt) Hawes, Larry lived a life marked by dedication, hard work, and a deep commitment to his family and faith.

After completing his education at Lena High School in 1954, Larry furthered his academic journey at Cornell College and Northern Illinois University before attending Southern Illinois Banking School. His academic endeavors laid the foundation for a distinguished career in banking, which began at the State Bank of Freeport. Larry's dedication and leadership skills led him to the First National Bank of Amboy, where he served with distinction as Bank President for 28 years, Chairman of the Board for 33 years and Board Member for 40 years.  Under his guidance, the bank experienced significant growth, a testament to his visionary leadership and unwavering resolve.

Larry's professional achievements were matched only by his personal life. On June 30, 1962, he married the love of his life, Bette D'Inverno, in their hometown of Freeport. Together, they raised three sons, Jon, Paul, and Aaron, in a home filled with love, laughter, and faith.  Larry was a role model to his sons, teaching them the value of integrity and the importance of setting and achieving goals. He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Bette; his sons, Jon (Theresa) of Glenview, Paul (Lisa) of The Woodlands, Texas, and Aaron (Devi) of Shelbyville; and his cherished grandchildren, Olivia, Aidan, and Ben of The Woodlands, Texas, Tom and Dan of Glenview, and Abbi of Shelbyville, who will forever hold his memory in their hearts.

Lifelong members of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Amboy, Larry and Bette found strength and community in their faith. Larry served on the church's Finance Committee, reflecting his commitment to stewardship and service. His involvement extended beyond the church to the Amboy Fire Department Board and the KSB Hospital Board, where he contributed his expertise and leadership for the betterment of the community.

Larry's interests painted the picture of a man who loved the simple pleasures in life. Whether it was his love of horses, a round of golf at Shady Oaks or a quiet afternoon fishing at the Pits, he found joy in the outdoors and the camaraderie of friends and fellow community members. Retirement to Sun City, Arizona, with Bette allowed them to continue enjoying their passion for golf and the warmth of the sun, far from the cold winters of Illinois.

The legacy Larry leaves behind is one of unwavering commitment to his family, his career, and his community. His life was a testament to the values he held dear: hard work, integrity, and faith. He will be remembered not only for his achievements but also for the way he touched the lives of those around him with his strength, guidance, and love.

The Funeral Mass for Larry was held on Monday, February 5, 2024, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Amboy, with Monsignor Dan Hermes over the service.
