Norma Hubbartt Obituary

Norma Jean (Prosser) Hubbartt, 91, of Shelbyville, IL left her earthly home at 6:58 p.m. on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, in Mattoon Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, surrounded by the love of family.

Norma was born on March 23, 1930, in Shelbyville, the daughter of Lloyd and Zula (Schwenker) Prosser. Norma fell in love with a local man, Charles Edward Hubbartt of Mode, and they were married July 2, 1950, in Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Shelbyville. They were blessed with 71 years of marriage and three daughters.  Norma spent 20 years as a military wife, turning the local girl into a world traveler. Regardless of where military life and her husband’s career led, Norma always held a special place in her heart for her hometown of Shelbyville.

In 1983, Norma and Charles moved back to Shelbyville from Waukegan. In 1986, at the age of 57, Norma opened a new business in downtown Shelbyville, “The Wooden Nickel,” an antique and craft mall that thrived for nearly 24 years. Norma continued as an independent dealer into her 80’s. Many know Norma as a collector and for her competitive spirit at local auctions (#8). One of her most prized collections was of Heisey glass, the vast majority of which she donated to the National Heisey Museum in Newark, Ohio, where several of her pieces are on permanent display.

Norma’s love for her community was evident as she volunteered countless hours representing local business and the preservation of Shelbyville’s history. She served in key positions and actively participated in local festivals, fundraising events, the Lamplighters Association, the Festival of Lights and the repair and renovation of Forest Park’s Chautauqua building. Norma initiated the annual Angel Tree project for children in need, which grew in popularity among local churches and businesses.

Norma’s interest in history was also exhibited through her involvement with the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Shelby County Historical Society, and most notably, her involvement in numerous re-enactments portraying local dishwasher inventor, Josephine Cochran.

Norma has been a dedicated Christian her entire life and was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Shelbyville. Norma will be greatly missed by her beloved family and friends.

Surviving are her husband, Charles Hubbartt of Shelbyville; daughters:  Cheryl (Jim) Schrock of Shelbyville, Deborah Hoem of Grayslake and Cynthia (Bryant) Haney of Fairborn, OH; two grandchildren:  Adam (Jennifer) Schrock and Erin Haney; two great-grandchildren, Carter and Tori Schrock; brothers:  Ronald and wife Janet, Donald and wife Lynn of CA and Larry Prosser and wife Vicki of Tilton and sister-in-law, Marilyn Prosser of Pana.
