Tommy Joe Hoover, a cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2023, in Mattoon, Illinois.
Born on March 7, 1958, in San Antonio, Texas, to Vernon Frederick and Betty Jo (Woodworth) Hoover. Tommy married the love of his life, Peggy Matthews, on October 9, 1983. Their union was blessed with three wonderful children: Brianna Marie Hoover (Cody Neal), Kimberly Ilene Hoover (Nick Lueck), and Matthew William Hoover. Tommy was a devoted father who loved spending time with his children and cherished every moment he had with them. He was also blessed with nine grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in his heart.
He was a self-employed handyman, skilled in everything from construction to ironwork. His hardworking nature was evident in everything he did, and his practical skills were only matched by his kindness and generosity. He was the kind of man who would drop everything to help a friend in need. In his free time, Tommy enjoyed shooting pool, fishing, watching westerns, and listening to rock music. However, nothing brought him more joy than spending quality time with his family, especially his grandchildren. His family will remember him as a loving and caring man whose laughter and love for life were infectious.
Tommy is survived by his three children; nine grandchildren; his former wife and friend, Peggy Hoover; his brothers, Johnny Hoover, and Vernon Frederick Jr., and dear family friend, Ralph Hart. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members who will miss him dearly.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Tony, and Bobby; his sister, Betty Ann; and his nephews, Robert, and Anthony.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. For those who wish to express their sympathy in the form of a gift, the family kindly requests funeral fund donations made payable to Lockart-Green Funeral Home and mailed to 302 W. Main St., Shelbyville, IL 62565. Your generosity is deeply appreciated in this difficult time. Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville is assisting the family.
